There is a special moment when the saddle is gone and all that remains between rider and horse is the warmth of its body and a shared movement. Every step can be felt clearly, and the bond between the two becomes real and alive. This is bareback and bridleless riding – one of the most beautiful paths in our Academy at Zdravets Horse Riding Centre in the village of Skravena, near Botevgrad.
It is rooted in the Natural Horsemanship philosophy: communicating with the horse through trust, attention and love. The horse is a partner and a friend. When riders learn to understand its body language, the horse responds willingly and gladly, and riding becomes a conversation between two friends.
Riding directly on the horse’s back, riders develop natural balance, flexibility and a relaxed, steady seat. The body learns to follow the horse’s rhythm and to feel its every movement. When the reins give way to trust, guidance comes through gaze, breathing, weight and light leg cues. It is a subtle, respectful dialogue to which the horse responds with ease.
The path to this freedom is gradual and carefully built. We begin by getting to know the horse from the ground – care, communication and games that build trust. Then come balance exercises in the saddle, followed by riding with a soft halter, and only when rider and horse are ready does the moment come for bareback and bridleless riding. Every step is guided and supported by our instructors, at a calm pace suited to each rider.
Bareback and bridleless riding is suitable for children aged 5–14 as well as for adults. Children experience it as an adventure – they learn patience, confidence and responsibility, and their friendship with the horse stays in their hearts for a long time. Adults discover calm, harmony and a new sense of freedom in the nature of the Balkan Mountains.
